Generally the term social control applies to all the sanctions, responses or reactions oriented to the eradication or containment of deviant behaviour (Black 1976:2). Deviance is viewed to as to disturb social equilibrium and hence enforcing social control methods attempts to restore it. As a mode of sanction, formal social control methods include formal and informal methods. Formal social control methods for prostitution depend on several factors. Formal includes the legal system, which administers such sanctions as penalties, probation, custody and incarceration. Throughout the 20th century notions of normal sexuality have always been in play in the identification of prostitution in determining suitable legal responses to these practises.Informal social control methods include those ingrained in everyday social interaction. Informal sanctions ranging from derision, applause, scandal, glance to banishment with any member of the social group administering the sanction....
