F 15s
F 15s Everyone in here knows that they live in the most powerful nation on the planet. Just about every night on the news some reference is made about our military might and superiority. But, does anyone have any idea how great that might really is, how much more advanced we are than our enemies? Tonight I’m going to give everyone a little insight into history and capabilities of one of our most effective fighter jets, the F-15 aircraft. The F-15 was introduced into the U.S. arsenal in 1976, just after the Vietnam War. And was developed, mainly to out pace the Soviet Union. Since its introduction, it has been improved upon many times, which has resulted in 5models (a-e). But throughout its long career, not even one F-15 has ever been shot down in combat. The jet itself is a twin-engine speed machine. For every 1lb of plane the two engines can produce 1lb of thrust, pushing the jet at full after burner to speeds of 2.5 mach (two and ½ times the speed of sound) or 1875mph. To illustrate, that is like traveling from here to Las Vegas in less than an hour. The weapons of the F-15 are equally impressive. First off is the 20mm gatlin gun. It is mounted in the right wing of the plane and can fire its 940 round capacity of ammo in 9.4 seconds or 100 rds. /sec. The main round it fires is an explosive known as a HEI, which is powerful enough to blow a humvee in half and burns hot enough to melt through an engine block. The next is the Aim-9 missile, (2) which is a heat-seeking missile that that locks to jet engines of the enemy aircraft and doesn’t let go. Lastly, is the Aim 120 AMRAAM (advance medium range air-to-air missile). This missile uses its own radar system to track aircraft it starts hunting as soon as it is turned on and tells the pilot when it has located a target and cannot be shaken. If two planes try to out maneuver these misses they will communicate with each other and switch planes (fire and forget). It also has the capabilities of defending itself if it is fired on, through the use of chaff and flare. Flare is used if an enemy fires a heat seeking missile and chaff is used against a radar guided missile. But even with all its abilities and impeccable record it too is outdated by our newer military standards, and it will start to be phased out in 2004 by the F-22 Raptor, which is faster, more maneuverable and incorporates the space age stealth technology. In closing, this is just a small taste of our nation’s capabilities from a plane that has been in service for over twenty-five years. Since its inception, we have become much more technologically advanced in our military and even that much more powerful. And tonight I’ll leave you all with a quote from a friend of mine as F-15s roared over tiger stadium during halftime of game two years ago, he said “Hey boys, do yall hear that, that’s the sound of freedom.” Bibliography:
