Observation Observation I went to observe a meeting of the . This is an organization of select craftsmen who try and get there handcrafted wares to the public. The purpose of the meeting is to plan and organize craft shows and how they are going to get the people to come to the shows. The main topics of the meeting was craft shows and different items the members were going to try and sell to the public. The organization meets once a month to discuss any new business. This month the meeting was held on November second at six-thirty in. There were four members on the cabinet who get together to plan and schedule the meetings. They asked me not to reveal any of their names. The four members of the cabinet are the president, vice president, secretary, and the treasurer. The secretary was the newest member of the cabinet. The meeting that I observed was the first meeting that the secretary was able to fulfill her duties. There were also three other new members in the group that decided to join the organization. In order to be in the organization, all the regular members have to do is pay a membership fee but the cabinet members must be elected by the other cabinet members and by the other members of the group. When all of the members arrived at the meeting, the president asked the older members to stay outside and all of the new members to come in and sit down. The president passed out little booklets. She gave one to me. It was the agenda of what the group was going to discuss at the meeting. After she passed out the agenda the president explained all of the rules and regulations the members are asked to follow. When she was done talking with the new members, she asked the older members in the group to come in. She passed the agendas out to the rest of the members. I can tell there was primary tension between the new members because they just sat there at the beginning of the meeting and did not talk to anyone. They didn’t even participate very well. The president served as the liaison or spokesperson of the group to introduce the new members. Then I think some of the tension went away because they started to participate. It was six-thirty on the button when the president called the meeting to order. The members on the cabinet sit at a long table . The president was sitting at the far right of the table. She was considered a designated leader because she was elected by the group. I think she participated very well in playing her role as the leader of the group. She introduced the new members to the group and cabinet, explained the rules and regulations to the new members, called the meeting to order, and asked for new business. She also tried to get the new members to mature so that they would be comfortable enough to participate in the meeting. She broke the primary tension by introducing the new members to the group. They even allowed a joke or two get passed them. I think the group matured pretty fast compared to some club meetings in college that I participated in. I think the president played an important part in getting the group to mature. I would consider this a norm because she does this type of thing at every meeting that is held. The vice-president showed up late for the meeting. The president did not look happy. She likes everyone to be on time. I think the vice president is suffering from group hate because she did not participate well in the meeting. She sat on the right of the president in the middle. While the president was talking to the group, she used interaction cues by pointing to other members and telling them when to talk. She was doing the same towards the vice-president. The vice-president is always late or never shows up for the meeting. I think she could also be a social loafer because she did not talk much at the meeting and she just sat there listening to new information that is being passed around the room. This could be considered a norm. Honestly, I do not know how this person got elected vice-president. The secretary plays an important part towards helping the group to succeed. This person was very active in playing her role as the secretary. It was also her very first meeting in trying to fulfill her duties as the secretary. The purpose of the secretary’s job is to include accurate minutes or information for future references. When the meeting first comes to order, she starts by taking role of who is at the meetings and who is not. Throughout the meeting she records everything that goes on. She started out by taking a list of ideas that was recorded in a book from the last meeting. There was about five or six. She kept asking the group “What do you think “ to try ang get information from the other members to see if they wanted to sell there If the members of the organization liked the idea of selling their goods at a particular place, the treasurer would take over. The treasurer is the last person that makes up the cabinet of the Luzerne County Community Craftsmen. The treasurer takes care of the money and the budget. This person was also very active because when the president or the secretary would mention a craft show to the group, the treasurer would take over and report if the organization would have enough money to cover the costs of the In the middle of the meeting a conflict or problem came up involving one of the craft shows that is going to be held in February. The problem was that new owners had taken over the building that they were going to use. They had already paid the cost of the building to hold the craft show. They raised the price right after they wrote out the check. The members of the cabinet talked for awhile. Then they got the rest of the members involved The members of the cabinet braced concerns on whether to move the craft show to an alternate location or to keep it at the place where they originally were going to hold the show. They passed around alternate locations, but everyone in the group like the original location. So the treasurer looked to see if the organization would have enough money to cover the rest of the cost. All of the members voted on the original location and that one won. In my opinion, there are not many improvements that I would suggest to the organization. I would just try to get the vice-president to participate more within the group. I think the president should talk to the vice-president to see if the president could do anything to help. The meeting was very formal meeting, but the members were scattered all over the room. If a member had something to say to one of the cabinet members, it was very hard to hear them. I would suggest that they would get into a group around the cabinet members, that way everyone would be able to hear what they Bibliography:
