Coaching Tennis
Coaching Tennis Some people may think that tennis is just a blow off sport, that it doesn’t take any talent, and anyone can do it. I started playing tennis about 4 years ago and I remember how hard it was to learn. One of my best friends and I started playing together and his dad had taught him how to play, when he first started teaching me I got really frustrated because I would keep hitting the ball out and I found out that playing and coaching tennis was much harder than it seemed. The first part of coaching tennis involves what type of equipment to get. Tennis is a relatively cheap sport compared to a lot of other sports. What some people don’t realize when getting a racket is that the more expensive the racket is doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the one you want to get. The price of the racket is based on how much power the racket itself has and how good of a racket you get is based on how good you are. If you are just starting out you don’t need a $200 racket it will be too advanced for you and you will not be able to hit the ball like you should when you are just beginning. For beginners you are better off getting about a $25-$50 racket, they don’t have as much power and will be exactly what you need to start learning. After you get the racket the first thing you need to learn is how to grip the racket. You hold the racket almost like you are shaking someone's hand, it may feel a little uncomfortable at first, but after a while it will fill normal. The next thing to learn is how to swing the racket. When swinging the racket you need to get in the right stance which is turned sideways with your feet facing where your racket is. When you swing you need to try to keep the racket straight where the head of the racket is always even, not slanted. If you slant the racket you will either hit it up in the air too far or down to the ground before the ball goes over the net. When swinging you need to try to take a small step and go all the way through the ball with your racket, that will help you control the ball. The best way to start off is by having someone with a basket of balls hit the ball at your forehand while they are standing in the middle of the court right in front of the net. What you do is try to hit them, if you hit them the ball will be in. After that you need to focus on a target anywhere on the opposite side of the court and try to hit it. One of the hardest but most important part of tennis is keeping your eye on the ball all the way to the racket, if you don’t do that then you won't be able to control the ball as well. The next part of tennis is the backhand. You would think that if you can get the forehand down than you would have no problem with back hand but actually it is more difficult. It doesn’t really matter whether or not you use one hand or two hands on your backhand, it's which ever you feel more comfortable with. Your backhand is done exactly like your forehand except for you have to concentrate harder on keeping the racket even. Normally people have a problem with slanting their racket a bit and not watching the ball all the way to the racket on their backhand. If you do that than you will not be able to control your ball very well. How to learn your backhand can be done exactly like your forehand by having someone hit you a ball to your backhand while they are standing in the middle of the court right in front of the net and you try to hit them. Then try to find targets on the court and try to hit them, just like you did your forehand. After you get that down pretty well than you can try volleying with someone by someone hitting you a ball and you try to get it back to them keeping the ball in bounds. Another way to work on your forehand and backhand, and maybe an easier way is with a ball machine. The ball machine will simply hit a ball to you, give you time to hit it, and then shoot another ball to you, this will really help your game. After that you need to teach your student how to serve. While serving you stand behind the base line, throw the ball up by raising your arm all the way up and letting the ball go up about 3 feet from your hand. You should practice on throwing the ball up until it feels natural. After that you need to work on hitting the ball. After you throw the ball up you need to bring your arm back extended completely and try not to bend your elbow, serving is 75% in the wrist and 25% in the elbow. With your arm back and extended go through the ball trying to hit the ball as soon as you can reach it with your racket, that should make it go down at an angle that will clear the net and land in the box. At first don’t try to hit the ball too hard because you will not be able to do it, work slow first and work your way up slowly. The next part of coaching tennis is to teach your student the rules of the game. A tennis court has several lines on it such as: the baseline, the out of bounds line for singles, and the out of bounds line for doubles, and also the boxes for serving. There are two lines on each side of the tennis court about 3 feet apart the line closest to the middle is the out of bounds line for singles, and the line on the very outside of the court is the out of bounds line for doubles. The base lines are the very back lines, that is where you stand behind for serving. The last lines are the serve boxes, when serving on one side you try to serve the ball into the box on the opposite side of where you are standing and of the opposite side of the court over the net. The last part of coaching tennis is learning how to keep score. The score of the person that is serving is always the first number to be called out such as 15-love. Scoring goes: love, 15, 30, 40, game. If you and your opponent get to 40-40 that is called deuce. From there you go deuce, advantage server or advantage receiver, and then if the person who had the advantage wins the next point then the game is over, but if the receiver wins the point than you go back to deuce. One set is six games, and a full match is the best of six sets. All of what has been in my paper has been the basics of coaching tennis. I have covered how to hit the ball with your forehand and backhand, how to serve, the rules of tennis, and how to keep score. After you learn all of that you will know how to play tennis.
