My Final Victory
My Final Victory Friday night rolled around, it was the game we had all been working so hard for. Knowing we were seniors, we knew it would be the end of the journey. The team was ready, we had been working extremely hard for the past seven months for this. We were all in great shape and very rested. A few of the returning players were meeting me at my house to carpool to the final game of the state championship tournament. Everyone knew that the hard work had paid off when we won the semi-final game the preceding day. The time on the clock was 4:30 when the doorbell rang, fifteen minutes early. My three teamates were extremely anxious to get to the Kiel Center. I opened the front door and to my surprise the whole team was outside in their cars. They were all spiffed up in their shirts and ties, determined to win the game. As I threw my equipment in my friends car I was hoping that the next time I put it in there I would have a championship medal hanging around my neck. The caravan of about eight cars pulled away blaring the music of Van Halen and Metallica. I have never seen such a pumped up group of young men until then. My stomach was kind of queasy because of the great deal of nervousness that had come upon me. The team and I were cruising on highway forty heading away from the beautiful sunset that was occurring behind us. As we pulled into the parking garage for the players, I could feel the little tiny hair on the back of my neck stand up. The tension was great we knew the great challenge we were about to encounter. The garage gave me a feeling like I was some kind of celebrity that everyone wants to be. We unloaded our equipment out of the car and headed toward the locker room. The hallway was very silent as the team had become very focused. We all knew what had to be done. We passed all the security guards who all wished us good luck in our game. We finally arrived to our locker room where we all picked out a spot according to our position that we played. Our coach told us that all the defense and goalies should sit together and all the forwards should sit close. The second the team opened up their bags the raunchy stench of body odor filled the room. I set the stereo up and started playing the Rocky song that we would always listen to before every big game. The players were all dressed in our uniforms when the coach told us that he had a surprise for us. He yanked a box form the hallway and pulled out our new jerseys that he ordered for the great accomplishment. This reward reminded everyone of our unbelievable journey to the state game. Coach handed the jerseys out telling us the pride we should feel as we slip the sweater on. We had twenty minutes until the challenge when our coach ordered everyone to be quiet for his pre-game speech. He started out telling us how proud he was to be our coach and whatever happens in the next two hours he commends us. The rest of the speech was the strategy he wanted to use if we encounter any problems. In his final words the horn rang telling both the teams that it was time to take the ice. Walking toward the rink we could here the loud roar of the opposing crowds, chanting back and forth at each other. The arena was extremely cold, which made our muscles tighten up like a retracting rubberband. Each one of us lined up according to our numbers, which of course put me second, after the goalie. Being second to step out on the ice not only made me nervous, I had to stand next to the goalie, Ryan, whose equipment smelled the worse out of everyone on the whole team and was whining about how he was because he has a body like the State-Puff Marshmallow Man. It is a tradition of the league to announce all the players and coaches before the huge crowd. As I stepped out onto the rock hard ice, the announcer called my name and a sudden jolt of energy came firing through my body. When the announcer was done, both teams warmed up. After that the second horn rang alerting both of the teams that it was game time. Before the first drop of the puck some sixty year old, wrinkled up, wannabe stripper lady, sang the National Anthem. The second she started I knew it was going to be a disaster. She could not hit a single note right. That is when Dirt, the dirtiest kid you will ever meet, screamed out, "My mute grandma could sing ten times better than you," that is when the whole crowd erupted with laughter. After the comedy show was over both of the teams sent out their starters for the first face-off. The referee blew his whistle and picked the puck up from the linesman so he could start the game. The place was silent as the referee dropped the puck. The second the puck was on the ice the crowds started cheering. The feeling of having every person in the stands watching you, was nerve-wracking. After ten minutes into the first period the score was tied at 0-0. I could taste the salty sweat as it dripped down my steaming hot face. The crowd started to get kind of quiet when out of the blue my teammate blasted a shot from the top of the face-off circle making the score 1-0, De Smet. This got our crowd fired up causing the opposing team to get down on themselves. The first period ended with my team up by one goal. For the first time in this match between DeSmet and Chaminade, I had some confidence that we were destined to win. The second period started with some very hard hits and was extremely quick paced. The first five minutes had gone by and we were dominating the game when a Chaminade player broke free from the third line defense and scored a fluke goal off a very slow, trickling shot. This changed the momentum of the game. Within seconds, the game went from exciting to edge of your seat action. The only problem was our team lost a lot of determination when our goalie let the Chaminerd score. The team finished off the second period very slow and lacidazical. The start of the third period came very quick giving everyone a little break. I, on the other hand, was totally rejuvenated and ready to tear the ice up. I just knew that we were going to win. I skated as fast as my legs would allow me but could not make anything happen. The whole third period had passed by and no one scored. The horn blew and all the players knew that this next period would be the toughest period we had encountered all year long. We all sucked down some ice cold water, which tasted as if it had come straight from an untouched spring. The overtime period began with the crowds louder than ever. Every once in a while I could here someone say, " GO KYLE!" The first couple minutes had gone by and no one had scored, yet there had been many opportunities. In fact, I hit the crossbar with a blistering slapshot from the point. Two minutes later the puck broke loose from one of the Chaminade defensman and landed on our most talented player’s stick. He is not only as fast as lightning but can also stick handle around any NHL team blindfolded. He made a quick move to the left, and then to the right. He took the shot which went top shelf on the right side. The second I saw the net move I knew we had done it. The underdog team defeated the 1st ranked team in the state championship game for Missouri high school hockey. An uproar from the mob of people could have been heard from two miles away. I couldn’t believe we had done it. We beat the odds, and took the cup. I felt shivers travel down my bruised and cut body. The hard work did pay off, for we had done it. The tears were flowing like the water dropping from the Niagara Falls. We were State Champions. Bibliography:
