Roberto Clemente
Roberto Clemente I am Roberto Walker Clemente #21. I was born on August 18, 1934 and raised in barrio San Antonio a section in Carolina, Puerto Rico. My parents were Melchor and Lisa Clemente. One strength was that I have always had a passion to play baseball and was good at it. At the age of 18 years old, on October 9, 1952, I signed a contract with the Santurce Crabbers of the Puertorican winter league. Throughout my time with them my fans adored me. Then on February 19, 1954, I signed a new contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Apparently I did not know that I was going to be offered another team on November 22, 1954 with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an unprotected player. I was very happy just to be able to play baseball with all my heart. On December 31, 1954, my oldest brother Luis died of a brain tumor. This made me very depressed and had me play even harder than before. Thanks to my playing my team the Pirates won the World Series, beating the Bronx Bombers. I finished the series with a .310 batting average. I led the National League in assists five times and won twelve consecutive Gold Glove Awards! I was on my way to Nicaragua to take them some food and supplies after an earthquake. When my plane crashes and I die of the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Impact upon the world was so much that the mandatory 5-year waiting period was waived. Roberto Clemente was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on August 6, 1973. Fun fact I was the first Puerto Rican to be elected into the hall of fame Roberto Clemente was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on August 6, 1973. The mandatory 5 year waiting period was waived. Roberto Clemente was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on August 6, 1973. Hero: At a ceremony in 1973 Commissioner Bowie Kuhn honored him by creating the "Roberto Clemente Award", the highest award in baseball for sportsmanship and community activism. Kuhn spoke proudly about Clemente, He was so very great a man, as a leader and humanitarian, so very great an inspiration to the young and to all in baseball, especially to the proud people of his homeland, Puerto Rico."
