The New York Giants
The New York Giants There are many problems in America that do need our utmost attention and must be resolved as soon as possible. None of which are as important as that of the New York Giants ongoing pace of mediocrity. The post-Parcells era has left Giants fans drooling for and craving a solid Giants football team. Not once have fans been confident in any New York football Giants team since the days of the Big Tuna, which is about 10 years ago. This is a long drought for a New York Sports team. What can be done? First and foremost, the Giants have had offensive problems ever since they lost the great coach Bill Parcells. He is Jesus to the New York Giants franchise. His disciples included that of Coach Bill Belicheck, Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor, Mark Bavarro, Joe Morris, OJ Anderson, Dave Meggett, Steven Baker, Carl Banks, and several others. Now, no one is asking for the stellar and almost unbeatable Giants teams again. That does not come around too often. However, can we produce a team on the field that at least mirrors the talent of those players. We need leaders, and top talented players such as those to help produce on the field. Enough of reminiscing on how great those players and coaches were, lets get to the bottom of this. Do not get me wrong, I love Jim Fassel, the current Head Coach of the New York Giants. However, I do not think he is the answer to the Giants woes on the field. He came to the Giants as an inexperienced head coach and has limited playoff experience. I also do not believe he has the experience to draft solid talent, which leaves this in the hands of the weak Giants front office. Fassel is supposed to be the QB guru, and I have yet to see a top notch QB step on Giants field other than those of the other teams the Giants are facing. Maybe, Fassel should be reduced to being just a QB coach, and work with his QB’s than being the head coach. Perhaps he is lacking the “oomph” that is needed to spark your NFL football team on Sundays. What should the Mara’s(the Owners) do? Find a new Head Coach. Secondly, the Giants need to work on their drafts. I am sick of seeing small impact players get drafted. Other teams bring in players that step on the field their first year and make an impact throughout all of the NFL. The Giants have been longing for a stud reciever, and passed up on Randy Moss, and have picked up Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer. Ike and Amani are doing better than average, but neither is a stud WR and would need a stud to help open their long ball game up more. They rack up yardage stats when they are down late in the game and throw the bombs. Other than that, it is mostly short ball plays that produce for the Giants. This past year I am proud of the drafting of Ron Dayne. I believe he is the first step towards good drafting. It was not a hard decision though, considering he was a Heisman trophy winner and holds NCAA rushing records. Other than Dayne and Maynard(who is merely a punter), I have not seen a stud drafted by the Giants in a long time. What about an offensive solution? How long does it take to make an offense click. I have seen 3 and outs kill the Giants for years. I personally, am deathly sick and ill from seeing Brad Maynard be forced to punt so many times a game. They play a field position game, without scoring. The QB position has been solidified by Kerry Collins who has not shown me a big passing day. I want a 300 yard 3 touchdown Sunday. 192 yards and 1 TD doesn’t cut it when you’re trying to make it to the Super Bowl. I like the intangibles of Kerry Collins, but I do not think the passing game is up to par. We need to get a young fresh QB who can learn the offense and help it produce more. If not, go get a veteran who will put up big numbers and make things happen. Jeff George rings a bell, he is a backup in Washington, and would be a starter in NY. Furthermore, on offense, the offensive line has seen several sluggish years. I am proud of the offensive line production this year. The front office went out and got a serious offensive line in the off season. They are seasoned veterans mixed in with strong youngsters. They have shown some great elements on the field helping open up holes for Ron Dayne and Tiki Barber. They are also good at holding up the Defensive line for Kerry Collins. However, they are doing this against teams they should do it against. What about the top teams they will be facing in a playoff situation. Tennessee and Washington ravaged the Giants offensive line. They are both exceptionally stellar defensive teams, but no need to whine when those are the types of teams you need to beat if you want to win the Super Bowl. Hopefully they can pull it together. If they do not by the end of this season, the Giants need to pick up one more Pro Bowl stud Left Tackle to solidify that side. Finally, the Giants need to keep Jason Sehorn healthy. This is one thing I do not have a solution for other than getting a backup that is just as good. Look at what the Redskins did. They have 3 Pro Bowl Cornerbacks on the team. The Giants could use that extra corner as a backup for the time when Sehorn inevitably goes down. Other than that, the defense is filled with playmakers and pro bowlers. They may suffer a little from the absence of Philippi Sparks at the other corner spot, but I’m sure they can win without him. That’s all that needs to be done. To some, it may sound simple, but in reality it is not. As a fan I realize this and I keep my faith in the organization. I trust they will make the right decisions in the near future and bring the Super Bowl rings back to the Meadowlands. I do miss Parcells, Simms, Taylor and company, but that time is over. Its time to move on, and find a championship with this new core of Giants. Lets hope that time is now. Bibliography:
