Last weekend, though, was the first time John and I have ever paired up to play each other. I could tell from the atmosphere that this was going to be a great rilvery. The first game we played was a real, “clash of the titans”. I had Nebraska and John had Texas, while playing in what some sports critics believe as the game of the century. After the horn sounded for the four quarters of regulation the score was tied. In overtime it went back and forth on four brilliant scoring drives led by John and me. Going into the third and final overtime my hands were sweating, just as if I were really out on the field. It was time to step up and make a big play on defense, and that’s just what happened. My free safety jumped up and stole the ball from one of John’s receivers. Now Coach Campbell is going to release his secrets of winning at College Football 2002 in good faith that my secrets will not be used against him some day. The main offensive weapon needing to be mastered is the pass. Learning the art of passing can open up for the run, as well as, drive your opponent crazy. In just about every playbook, there are at least one to two plays that are virtually unstoppable. I generally like the plays that have the receiver break at forty-five degree angle on his route. If the opponent starts running a pass coverage defense, then simply run a halfback draw up the middle. Doing this keeps the opponent guessing on weather or not the play is a going to be a run or a pass. Utilizing a good pass run balance should get enough points to take home the trophy. Defense is more of a guessing game unless you are playing the little sisters of the poor. Knowing the opponent’s strong points and weaknesses is the biggest key to running a successful defense. If the opposing player likes to run a lot, keep a more relaxed, base defense. More experienced players will have a tendency to pass more than they run. In this case a more aggressive, blitzing defense is required. Pressure on the quarterback is the key to denying the opponent time to find an open receiver. My favorite defense is the nickel, while blitzing the middle linebackers. This defense leaves my defensive backs with man-to-man coverage, but it puts an unbelievable amount of pressure on the quarterback. Special teams are one aspect of the game that is often overlooked as not being important. Blocking extra points, field goals, and punts can change the momentum of the entire game. I have won a countless number of games with special teams. The key to blocking kicks is timing. A second too early, or a second too late can cost you. Onside kicks can help to keep the offense on the field and the defense off. Mastering onside kicks can be a huge weapon in diminishing the opponent’s will to play. Some people believe this method of playing to be cheap. These are the one’s that have not yet figured out the art of onside kicks. These strategies may help ones playing abilities to a level above most of the playing field. Occasionally there will be a player to my potential that can beat just about anybody.
