Comparing search engines
Comparing search engines There are various search engines located on the Internet, which allow for numerous amounts of information to be recovered. The search engines I focused on are: Findwhat, Google, Webcrawler, Excite, Lycos, and Northern Light. While using these search engines my searches focused on topics of Ghana, teach abroad, and computer lesson plans. On Findwhat.com results are ranked on an open bidding system. Higher paid advertisements are closer to the top of the search engines. Findwhat.com provides built in filters, which can be activated if necessary. There is a limited amount of information on requested search topics. The number of web sites available for the information I requested are as follows: Ghana- 25, teach abroad- 2, and computer lesson plans- 75. Google.com uses text-matching techniques to find pages, Google only returns pages that include exactly the words you enter in the search box. Google allows the user to refine their search and its searches covers many URL’s. Google also provides restricted searches to the US government, Linux, Apple, BSD and universities. Googles help menu covers an array of topics, which proves very useful. The searches for the following topics were as follows: Ghana- over 100, Teach Abroad- over 100, and computer lesson plans- over 100 web sites. Excite.com is a visually overwhelming web site. This search engine provides a vast amount of information but I would not recommended its use for special education students, for they may get distracted easily. Excite offers quick find options to view specific topics in the areas of autos, careers, computers, entertainment, music, news, etc. Excite allows you to view requested information with full descriptions, titles only, or just URL’s. The user also has the option of narrowing down their search with Excite’s ‘Zoom-In’ feature. One impressive feature excite has is its global access to countries like Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan and UK. This option allows users who speak different languages to have the same opportunity to information as English speaking users. Searches for the following information are as follows: Ghana- over 100, teach abroad- over 100, and computer lesson plans- over 100. Webcrawler.com is affiliated with excite and provides many of the same features. Webcrawler allows you to find information in specific areas such as the web, news, photos or in all topics. Webcrawler also has the ‘zoom in’ feature which allows you to refine your search. Webcrawler also has sponsored links from findwhat.com. Lycos is a popular search engine with similar features provided by Excite. Lycos contains a site map which provides the user with information related to the web sites options. Lycos divides its searches into topics like, feature listings, popular, web site categories and web site web results. Lycos also provides search guards to screen out adult, violent, hate and weapon related materials. Lycos also provides a child search engine called Lycos Zone. Northern Light is a fairly new search engine, developed in 1995, whose reviews have proved it to be a notable entity. Northern light allows you to create a simple search or a power search. Typing in Ghana in a simple search allowed for 543,670 web sites. Northern light tells you the percentage of information on the web site (ex. 66% articles and general info) and whether or not the site is educational or commercial. In a power search the user is given the ability to perform an advanced search locating the subject matter by subject, source, document type, and date. On Northern lights main page there are various points of interest the user to can proceed towards. These areas are Special Editions, Today’s Headlines, Today in the World Financial Press, and user information. Overall all of these web sites cover an array of information but just in different styles. Personal preference applies towards the ranking of these web sites. Sometimes users can become tied down to one search engine out of habit. Bibliography:
