Green Party
Green Party When I was assigned this Environmental I-search project, I was not too thrilled about the idea of me having to research subjects that have to do with nature. My first challenge was finding a topic, which I found interesting, and intrigued me into looking further into this topic. My first choice was going to be researching the Casa Grande Fish Hatchery. I had chosen this topic because I have many friends that work in the hatchery, but never really knew why the hatchery was there, or what was done inside. But I encountered a problem when I discovered that I would not be able to interview any one over break. After thinking about another topic I could base my project on, I began to think about the green party. During the last presidential election, it seemed a lot of people were looking towards the option of voting for Ralph Nader, the leader of the green party, to be our next president. But it seems no one really knows what the green party represents, and what they believe. Before I started this project, I knew very little about the green party’s beliefs, and practices. All I knew is that they were into conserving nature, and thought of them as the hippie type. Basically I thought that they were interested in plants and greenery, and that their best interest was just to keep the earth clean in a matter that we can live on it for many years to come. There was a lot I wanted to learn about the green party, but I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t know what I wanted to know, all I knew is that I wanted to know more about this somewhat hidden party. I began to write down some questions, and comparing what I know about the other parties, and seeing if I could maybe clear up some of the doubts I had pertaining to the same issue, but with the green party. The main question, which I was trying to uncover was what exactly does the green party stand for? As I began the process of finding information about this topic, I ran into my first conflict. My plan was to first interview an authoritative figure such as a mayor, senator, some one in a political position. But as I looked in the phone book, I realized that the green party is very small (in proportion to the other parties) and does not have any local political figures representing them. This was a problem because the best source of information is probably some one who actually believes, and strives to live their life the way some one in the green party would. My next choice of searching was the encyclopedia. I found a little bit of information in the encyclopedia, but not too much. My last choice was to search the Internet. This too was somewhat of a problem. Any one who has searched the Internet before knows that there are millions of WebPages. Also, you know that about 95% of the time when you search, your results are pages that have nothing at all to do with what you are looking for. This is what happened to me. When I began to search, I ran into a lot of search engines that returned weird results. One site even sent me to a college party site when I typed green party. It was a nightmare at first, but as I kept searching, I learned how to search, and I learned which search engines were good, and which ones was just a bunch of garbage. Once I finally found a search engine that gave me the results I wanted, the information I found was full of great information that I probably would have never found in a encyclopedia, or from another person. One page I found gave me a good overlook on the green party its self, and the basic ideas behind it. There are nine main principles that guide the party to make the decisions, which it does. The first of those being Grass roots democracy. What is meant by Grass root democracy is every one counts. The green party strives to make every one in the community’s vote count, and not make a system where the senators, or the other political powers decide the laws for us. This means the public would vote on every law, and every one’s vote would count. The next principle of the green party is social justice and equal opportunity. We head a lot about some places being equal quality employers, but the green party believes every thing should be this way. They believe no body should be discriminated because of their race, gender, or sexual orientation. They feel every one is a citizen of the world, and every one is equal, so prejudice, or racism would make those being discriminated feel inferior, although they are just as good as the next person. Ecological wisdom is next. This is probably what the green party is best known for, their involvement with nature. The green party believes Human societies must operate with the understanding that we are part of nature, not separate from nature. Also that we must maintain an ecological balance and live within the ecological and resource limits of our communities and our planet. This means using our natural resources in a manner that will benefit generations to come, not harm them, and to use our resources sparingly so they can last for years to come. To conform to these needs, the green party feels we should use types of energy that will use no, or very little pollutants. Another big thing that the green party believes is in non-violence. As far as the green party is concerned, it is essential that we develop effective alternatives to society's current patterns of violence. This means that there will be a negative correlation in years to come with time, and the amount of weapons. The green party would like to get the number as low as possible, but at the same time not be naïve about what other governments plan’s are. This means we will crack down on personal weaponry, but we will be more lenient with weapons made to protect us in times of war. Economic justice is also one of the big concerns of the green party. The green party believes we live in a world that is very influenced by ones money. They feel that the poor are getting poorer, and the rich are getting richer. The green party believes that we should create more jobs, which are ecologically balanced, and that pay not just minimum wage, but to meet the person’s standards or living. This means pay would vary for every county, or city instead of for the entire state. For instance minimum wage in Petaluma might be 13 dollars to 15 dollars an hour because of the amount of house starts, and the amount of inflation of prices we have seen in these last few months. But in an area like eureka, or lake county the minimum wage would be more around 10 dollars because the housing there is so much less than in the bay area. Also, to decrease the amount of monopolization in this country, the green party believes in locally owned, and run businesses. There is too much money going to these big corporations, and it is bankrupting the smaller stores, and the green party does not approve of this. Today our society is primarily based on patriarchal roots that make women seem inferior to men. The green party believes strongly in feminism. By this, I do not mean men should act more like women, but by this I mean that women be taken more seriously. Up until this point women have always been paid less than men, and have not always been able to receive the same jobs, or respect men would receive. But in a world run by the green party, women would be just as important for men, and there would be more of a variation in managements, politics, and every thing else. Instead of just men, it would be more evenly split up between men and women. At the same time that they support gender split up, they also support ethnic diversity. As I stated above, they believe in non-prejudice of these other races, but also they believe that these races should expand their activity with each other. They believe that the many diverse elements of society should be reflected in our organizations and decision-making positions, and they also support the leadership of people who have been traditionally closed out of leadership roles. All this communication between races and sexes is all part of Global responsibility mentality, which the green party holds. That is that we should encourage individuals to act to improve their personal well-being and, at the same time, to enhance ecological balance and social harmony. Although all these goals have been focusing on the present, the green has many goals for the future as well. The green party states” Our actions and policies should be motivated by long-term goals. We seek to protect valuable natural resources, safely disposing of or "unmaking" all waste we create, while developing a sustainable economics that does not depend on continual expansion for survival. We must counterbalance the drive for short-term profits by assuring that economic development, new technologies, and fiscal policies are responsible to future generations who will inherit the results of our actions”. This is the green party’s main goal for the future. After having read all these principles of the green party, I have thought of what the green party stands for, and I came to this conclusion. The green party believes strongly in equality for all, whether it be race related, or sex related, they believe every one is just as equal. At the same time, they feel nature is highly important to us, and that the resources we use should be used sparingly, and to benefit us in the future. They believe in keeping harmony with every one. My interpretation of what the green party is a group of people interested in the well being of every one. Every one is equal, and every one has a say in society. The green party stands for ecological structure, and keeping the earth in the best possible conditions possible for future generations to come. Their goal is not merely to survive, but to share lives that are truly worth living. They are trying to encourage everyone to see the worth in all of life, and to take the time to understand and appreciate themselves, their community and the beauty of this world. When I first started I thought that the green party was made up of just a bunch of people who were just interested planting trees. But after researching, I have found out a lot about the green party. Not only are they interested in ecological balance, but in human-to-human communications. They are interested in keeping every one in harmony, this includes non-violence, they are interested in the diversity of the world, and they are interested in giving those who haven’t been able to be in high places before, and trying to get them there. Before this report I would have never even thought about joining the green party, but after having done this research, I think there is a good chance I might in the future. It seems like a good political party that would benefit every one, and solve a lot of inequalities in this country. Although I was not able to interview any one o the green party, the information I found online was enough to tell me this is a very well put together political party with great ideas.
