It is the part that humans reach maturity, become adult, and attain full growth. Also, it means one more thing. It could mean understand more about the society. In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mocking Bird, it shows the different ways of growing up and different kinds of growing up. There are three main character who went through the process of growing up. Scout mentally grew up. She learned a lot about Maycomb County in the book. Jem went through a process of growing up that every adolescent would go through. Aunt Alexandra also went through a mental growing up. She changed a lot toward prejudice of Maycomb County after an unfair trial. Scout was the teller of the whole book. She was a young daughter of a lawyer, Atticus. They lived in Maycomb County with Scout's brother and Aunt in the 1930's. At the beginning of the book, she didn't know much about the prejudice of Southern America. She basically knew nothing about prejudice. She thought every person was the same as her. But she found that out at last. She also finally found out that most people were nice. She just had to put herself in those people's situations. "As I made my way home, I thought Jem and I would get grown but there wasn't much else left for us to learn, except possibly algebra." This statement showed that she understood the prejudice and people's thinking at last. That would make her life a lot different. Jem was Scout's brother. He was a little older than Scout. He also became familiar about the prejudice of Maycomb County through the story. In addition, he grew up like most teenagers would. "He was difficult to live with, inconsistent, moody" said Scout. That statement was made when Jem started to grow up. He didn't want to play with Scout like a little kid anymore. He wanted to be like a man. Aunt Alexandra was Atticus's sister. She moved to live with Scout and Jem because she wanted to teach them the right way of growing up since their mom was dead. As she watched them grew up, she grew up mentally also. "…..People up there set them free, but you don't see them setting at the table with them. At least we don't have the deceit to say to them yes you are as good as we are but stay away from us." Said Mrs. Merriweather. That statement made Aunt Alexandra to realize the prejudice of Maycomb County. She started to change later on. Every person needs to grow up. There are many ways to grow up. In this novel, three kinds of growing up are demonstrated. Among all three, growing mentally was the most important. If someone doesn't grow up like Scout did, that person can never live in the society, even in present time. Bibliography: Word Count: 488
