sports A true "giant" in the game of football! When people think of great quarterback a few names come to mind such as Montana, Joe Namath, and Dan Marino. Dan Marino holds many of the great recorders held in his position. Even though he never won the ring he always Born Daniel Constantine Marino JR., born on September 15, 1961. In Pennsylvania in the western part of the state. Dan grew up in Parkview Avenue in the south Oakland section of Pittsburgh. With his father Dan senior, his mother veronica, and two younger sisters. His father grew up there and his grandfather came form Pittsburgh from Italy. His father drove a truck for the Pittsburgh Press newspaper. And often worked as a landscaper part time. He got Dan involved Dan's Father helped make the perfect release that we all know about father would tell young Dan throws it from your ear. His dad would hit grounder at him or throw the football. Raising an all pro is what he was doing. He showed great skills at a young age and a powerful arm. In fourth grade is when Dan's talent began to blossom. Although Dan was a great athlete school was another thing. His graders were bad and he was not to smart. He went to St. Regis School, which was located directly across from his He attended High school at Central Catholic High school. His strong arm love for competition helped him become a leader on the football field as well as on the baseball field. Dan became a young start at his school. As a freshmen ands sophomore he was back up varsity quarterback. Then his junior year he when he began to shine in the pocket. He broke every passing record at his school. He was also punter and place kicker for his team. His senior year he was named to the high school all American team by Mean while Dan's rifle arm also impressed many baseball scouts. The Cincinnati Reds clocked his fastball at 92 miles per/hour. He a; so had a batting average of .550 and had a record of 25-1 his senior year as a pitcher. Marino high school number was the infamous number 13 which he wore though his career. It was also his baseball number in high school. Many colleges wanted his arm and power for both baseball and football. great on the mound and in the pocket. Schools such as Michigan State, UCLA, and A little know fact is that before he decided to attend college he was to the Kansas City Royals. The Royals wanted him to play third base or outfield even though he played pitcher and shortstop in high school. They offered him a 30,000-dollar contract. As a senior he had to decide between money and college. But he knew in his heart he wanted to play football so he chooses to attend college. He thought about maybe going to a school out west but instead he decided to stay at home where he loves. At the university of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh jumped on him right away. He is a "Pittsburgh Guy". As a boy he remembered going to the stadium and rooting for the Panthers. He watched Tony Dorsett lead Pitt to the national championship in 1976. His father was proud of his son's decision to stay close and attend college where he could watch his son He was a Hometown boy and a hometown favorite. Although not starting as freshmen they knew he would be the guy soon they all did. Even though they had a good quarter back in Rick Trojan. He did get game play his first year when Trojan was hurt against Kansas. His first throw was intercepted and the next was almost picked off too. He got another chance against Navy and he showed what he had. He completed ten straight in the fourth and ended up with two touchdowns The next year he got the job as starter when Tracno went to defrense knew Marino was the man for the job if they wanted to win. He did not play base in college he just wanted to play football. In 1981 he had his best season in college. He lead the team to a supurb of 10-0. But then they lost to Penn State which made them loss a chance to be the nations champs. Marino was third in the Heisman voting beat by Marcus Allen and Herschle Walker. Allen won the trophy. Pitt lost the Suger bowl that year on New Years day. They beat themselves, with 14 penetlies. He lead his team for After his junior year many scouts thought he would be a top pick for However, his senior year he threw more picks than touchdowns. He was taken in the first round, however 26 player were picked before him. John Elway was number one in the draft. John and Marino were competing all of their football carears. He was the sixth quarterback taken in the draft. The Dolphins were not really looking for a quarterback but took him anway. The year before they went to the Super bowl and lost. The dolphins had no idea what they were getting form this young gun with a cannon for an arm. Marino signed a cotract for 2 million bucks over 4 years. The first thing he purchased as a satellite dish for his parents so they could watch his games every week. Marino's first game was on Monday Night football aggianstt the LA threw 2 touchdowns and looked very sharp in just three minutes. Dan's first start camein October of 1983. The Dolphins were at home facing the Bills for the second time that season. After lossing twon in a row the dolphins wanted to win bad so they sent in the young blood with a cannon. Marino was down 14-0 at the end of the first half. However he was not down for the count he took his team back and made it a game he showed he had the skills to be a good pro quarterback. He took the game to overtime with a score 35-35. But it was not enough they lost by a feildgoal. Marino threw 19-29 with 322 yards in the air. He showed he could lead a team. The next week he came out strong and beat the Jets and got his first win. Marino was up for rookie of the year and his only compition was running back Eric Dickerson. Miami fell in love with their new young quarterback. He lead the team to the playoffs his first year. But were The next year is the season we all know about. The 1984 is when he was a part of a record breaking season for himself and his team. Dan passed for over 400 yards four times in 84 this is one of five records he broke that year. Don Shula was very impressed with what he was seeing from his young start. He also broke the record for most td's(48) in a season. The Dolphins had a record of 14-2. He had the record for passing yards(5,084) and completions(362). He lead his team to the Super Bowl XIX where they would face the NFC champs the San Fransico 49ers. Who had a quarter you might know as Joe Montana. Even though his team lost he showed what a good quarterback he was. Marino was named player of the year in just his second season of play. Ten days after his Super Bowl loss he got married to his home town sweat heart Claire Veazey. But he had some tough seasons to come. He did not return to the playoffs again in tell 1990. Dan Marino was a great quarterback but he never got what he wanted and that was a ring. In 84 he got as close as a player could get. He would never get that close again. For his great career he had no ring but the 4,453 completions out of 7,452 attempts 59.9% 55,416 yrds 385 tds 220 Now Dan Marino works for the HBO NFL sports show, where he calls it as he sees it.
