Potential Emergence of Small Business Enterprise

This study investigated the potential for small business to become an important component of global e-commerce, where global e-commerce refers Internet-based economic activity that is transnational in character.

Several research questions were investigated in relation to the problem stated in the preceding section. These questions were as follows:

1. What is the potential for small businesses in high-income economies to compete successfully in e-commerce at the domestic level? There are 26 such economies with a mean per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of US$24,930 (World Bank, 1999).

2. What is the potential for small businesses in mid-level economies to compete successfully in e-commerce at the domestic level? There are 17 such economies with a mean per capita GDP of US$4,260 (World Bank, 1999).

3. What is the potential for small businesses in lower middle-income economies to compete successfully in e-commerce at the domestic level? There are 41 such economies with a mean per capita GDP of US$1,670 (World Bank, 1999).

4. What is the potential for small businesses in high-income economies to compete successfully in e-commerce at the global level?

5. What is the potential for small businesses in mid-level income economies to compete successfully in e-commerce at the global level?

6. What is the potential for small businesses in lower middle-income economies to compete successfully in e-commerce at the global level?

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential for the emergence of small business enterprise to compete successfully in e-commerce at the domestic and global level. The diffusion model of economic growth and development points out that advanced technology, industrialization, infusion of foreign capital, and increased economic diversification leads to development.
