The organisation's major weakness is its overreliance on the European market. 86% of the company's revenues come from European consumers, compared to 12% from North America and the rest from other global markets (Datamonitor, 2008, p. 11). Balfour Beatty is currently in the position to take advantage of various opportunities, such as expansion in the UK private finance initiative (PFI) market (Datamonitor, 2008, p. 22). The acquisition of Birse and other UK construction firms has opened up new opportunities to grow regionally (Datamonitor, 2008, p. 23). The acquisition of Parsons Brinckerhoff has increased opportunities for expansion in the U.S. market as well for entering "potentially lucrative markets in Australia, India, China, and South Africa" (Balfour Beatty, Parsons Brinkerhoff join forces, 2009, p. 6). There are also opportunities for further expansion in the United Arab Emirates and other locations within the Middle East (Foreman, 2007). The major threats faced by Balfour Beatty include intense competition, government regulations, and the increasing cost of raw materials (Datamonitor, 2008, p. 20).
