Women also had acquired greater sexual freedom in the 1920’s, Contraceptives were becoming more readily available, sex was casual, the smoking and drinking woman became more acceptable, and short skirts were in. Even though women had the right to vote there was a small turnout in the election of 1920. Many women leaders were disappointed in the turnout and decided to educate women in the reality of politics so they organized the National League of Women Voters to get women more involved.In the 1920s the concentration of blacks in urban areas led to the cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance, which used art, music, and literature to demonstrate the creative abilities of African Americans. A new generation of African American political leaders, such as Black Nationalist Marcus Garvey who was a Black Nationalist leader and union organizer created the “Back to Africa” movement in the United States. A. Philip Randolph, also found support among urban African Americans. Alain Locke the first black Rhodes scholar and professor of philosophy at Howard University was considered the father of the renaissance movement. He wrote a book in 1925 entitled the New Negro, which outlined black contributions to American culture and civilization. African Americans also created an independent community and institutional life. They established schools, banks, newspapers, and small businesses to serve the needs of their community.The red scare promoted many patriotic organizations determined to eliminate communism from American life. Groups like the American Legion, American Defense Society, Sentinels of the Republic, the United States Flag Association and the Klu Klux Klan emerged as patriotic organizations.
