This symbolizes holy water, that by her movement in the picture, is going to be sprinkled onto Christ. Water in the background symbolizes purity. The priest and the nun are in the painting to show their eternal devotion to Christ and to show the belief in Christianity.The Agony in the Garden painted by Raphael was done in a method of using Tempera on wood. Tempera is a form of painting process where pigments are mixed with yolk and water or oil. Its a fairly quick drying process and demands immediate application of layers of paint. An artist using tempera has to work just as fast as the artist that uses fresco techniques. The painting is 9 1/2 x 11 3/8 inches, and was funded by various donors.The scene of this painting is a part of a predella for the altarpieces done by Raphael. It was removed in 1663 with the piece of a piece that showed Christ carrying a cross. The painting was done in black and white to show its simplicity. It shows Christ praying and kneeling down before a rock with an angel on it. The three other characters are in form of morning and despair. The are all supported by other things in the painting such as a tree and rocks. The trees in the distance are not fully bloomed and look like they are thinning so this may symbolize a time of the year like fall or early spring, and may also symbolize mourning or despair.
