Because efficiency is highly valued in this society, hypnopaedia was viewed as the greatest moralizing and socializing force of all time,(28). Part of its effectiveness is the comfort and relaxation it gives in a world of constant movement. Even if the tactics are discovered by a young person, often times they just go back to sleep to the rhythm of the voices: under the influence of those endless repetitions, the gradual soothing of her mind, the soothing, the soothing, the stealthy creep of sleep(74). These soothing voices act as a substitute for a mother; the rhythm of the voices is similar to the rhythm of a heartbeat. Lastly, soma is used to suppress any sense of individuality, which obviously breaks the conformity in the society, and breaking the stability. Whenever a person begins to feel emotion, think their own thoughts, or even just simply have time to think, soma is taken to get rid of these feelings. Soma creates the ability to take a holiday from reality whenever you like, and come back without so much as a headache or a mythology,(54). One just escapes from emotion whenever it clashes with their caste or place in society; stability is then reinstated. To help enforce the caste system, and the disregard of those outside ones class, soma helps to disassociate people from their surroundings, that second dose of soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their minds,(77). When Lenina does not have her soma with her in the reservation, she uses a handkerchief to cover her nose, I wish I had my soma!(116) she exclaims. It is a conditioned response inside of her to try and hide from exposure to unpleasant things.
