people may face because of the color of their skin (Cleage, p22). In the beginning of the play Lena tries to go shopping for apples. The clerk who is selling her apples is white. He tries to sell her apples that have already been partially eaten or rotten. When she tries to confront him about this, he tells her is she doesnt like it, she can shop somewhere else. The reason he takes this attitude with her, is probably because she is colored. Later on, towards the end of the play, there is a more dramatic event that occurs because the Youngers are African American. The house that Lena buys is in Clybourne Park, the only nice house she could find for a reasonable price. The only difficulty is that Clybourne Park happens to be in an all white area. Right before the Youngers are going to move in, they get a visit from Mr. Linder, who claims to be a member of the welcoming committee from Clybourne Park. However, his real intent is to convince them not to move into the new house. On behalf of everyone in the neighborhood, he offers to give them everything they paid for the house, and more. Mr. Linder says And at the moment the overwhelming majority of our people out there feel that people get along better and take more of a common interest in the life of the community, when they share a common background (Hansberry, pg 165). He continues on with his explanation, claiming that it is not about prejudice; it is about people having a common backgrounds. The Youngers throw him out of the house and ultimately move into the house anyways. This shows how white peoples fears of colored people, make it so hard for colored people to have the same lifestyle and opportunities as white people.Death of a Salesman only had white characters.
