It also seems that this middle class family was indeed affected by the army considering her dad was in the military. I don’t think anyone would want to be in the narrator’s shoes. In the beginning of the book it looks like she has a rough life. I also don’t understand why Mary Karr’s mom was so desperate to get pregnant the second she met her dad? I felt what was pretty bizarre was that the war letters that Mary’s dad wrote were passed on to her by her aunt Iris. Pages 27-39Why did Mary’s Grandma call cotton a mean crop? Is there significance for that later on in the book? Was it because it was very difficult to cultivate and to groom? I also don’t understand why her dad’s car had such an impact on her. She mentioned that it weighed a lot and the car lit up like Broadway. Why does Mary say the bible means nothing to her? She says that her Grandma had a huge family bible, which say in a heavy plastic wrapper on the coffee table. Her mother threatened for a divorce a lot of times, and her dad’s response to it was as if it couldn’t be an option. My parents are the same exact way. No matter the severity of the fights they get into, they never consider divorce as one of the choices. Pages 52-63I absolutely love poetry.
