It looks as if Mary’s mother is very well educated for someone who presents herself as ignorant.Pages 103-114I feel extreme sympathy for Mary because I am sure all humans know what it’s like to lose a loved one through death. She mentions she had a serious case of insomnia when her grandmother passed away. I felt the same exact way when my grandmother passed away. Grandmothers’, as Mary mentions, are the best because they spoil you. If was her, I would mentally try to block the humming sounds she heard at night’s by trying to sleep. If someone is tired enough, they will sleep. Her insomnia in my opinion was more of a mental thing that it was a medical condition. Pages 131-140I think the mother has a bad influence on the narrator. She is drinking in this scene grieving about New York. She tells her children stories like how Bing Crosby smoked marijuana at a nearby penthouse. Mary mentions what Einstein once said: “I never bother to remember anything I can look up.” I strongly agree with this because some teachers in my life have made me memorize completely unnecessary material that could have just been referred to. Her mother is a fan of the arts just like my mother. They both enjoy opera and deceased artists. Pages 160-173My parents frequently told me never let anyone take advantage of you or manipulate you in any way. That way they will lose respect for you. Mary’s dad tells her the same thing only his advice backfires. She bites a kid that destroys which is told that it ruins her reputation and makes her the worse kid on the block.
