rtments of the Navy. There is a small difference between the movie and the real story, the real Carl Brashear was never promoted to a higher rank, like Cuba Gooding Jr. was in the movie. Brashear was transferred but kept his rank. Further, the incident did not lead to his transfer right away but was a stepping-stone for a later transfer out of the Stewart Branch. Once out of the Steward Branch, the real Carl Brashear as well as the movie character had to write many request letters to finally get accepted to diving school. The real challenge in his life would begin right there. He was the only black diver among all white sailors. In fact all the threats towards Brashear that are showed in the movie actually occurred, from racists notes on his bed, to the embarrassing hose showers by his superior in the morning. According to Carl Brashear in an interview conducted by Fred Topel of About.com, the divers had to go through a lot and show their commitment and strength in order to make it through the program. Cuba Gooding Jr. was able to portray the emotions and feelings of Carl Brashear in a very convincing way. There was no superhero mood in the Hollywood movie, but the real person was hero enough to lay ground for an exciting and inspiring story. The movie shows Cuba Gooding Jr. with his strong will to become a Navy Master Diver, Thats what I want to be, a Navy Master Diver. There is almost no exaggeration in the way the scenes are made and also regarding their content as in other Hollywood Action Movies such as Last Action Hero with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Even the scene where Carl (Cuba Gooding Jr.) has to pass his final exam in diving school was very realistic, although it is hard to imagine that someone had actually go through this. As a final exam of diving school every diver had to assemble a pipe below water, and the necessary tools were given down to them.
