Men of Honor

Most people would feel tremendous bitterness faced with such unfair actions, but Carl Brashear has never spoken out, nor felt any anger towards anybody. But what are the effects of Hollywood-Fiction on a real story like that? In Men of Honor everything seems to have happened exactly as it is shown. That is true for most of the scenes in the movie, one can say that the seriously written script by Scott Marshall Smith is very close to reality, yet some scenes were slightly different that reality. Indeed, Brashear went to the moor bar and had contests with his superior or other Navy divers. In the movie this superior was played extraordinary well by Robert DeNiro as Master Diver Billy Sunday. In reality this character existed, according to the writer Scott Marshall Smith the real character was not one person but two. One superior was a racist that gave Brashear a hard time achieving his goal and the other was a Master Diver who appreciated Brashears determination and strong will. The contest were almost like the one shown in Men of Honor, however, there were no masks in the bar, instead they simply used tanks. Not many things were different in the movie than what really happened to Carl Brashear, most scenes came very close to reality, even the ones under water. In my research about the movie and Carl Brashears life I found that there was actually only one situation that was completely different. After the collision of two B52 bombers before Spains coast, nuclear bombs were lost. Carls job was to find one of the bombs that fell in the Mediterranean Sea. In this scene one can see Cuba Gooding Jr. at the ground of the Mediterranean in is duty to look for the bomb, suddenly facing a Russian submarine.
