pped around the sub that he survived the incident. The situation was even more unbelievable when the rope came loose and he found the bomb. In this scene Hollywood was better than real life. The bomb was never found by a diver, but by a special unmanned submarine of the Navy. Brashears only duty was to secure the bomb and attach it to ropes so the crew of the USS Hoist could lift it up. Unfortunately, later at that day Carl Brashears leg was hit and smashed by a pipe when he pushed some of his fellow sailors aside so they would not be harmed. The real incident must not have been very different than the scene in the movie. When Brashear got to the hospital he was already believed dead, but there was a faint heartbeat and he survived. After that accident the real struggle of Brashear began. Carl Brasher had his leg amputate in order to achieve his goal to become a Master Diver. The movie is basically a copy of reality, Brashear had to prove to a medical examination board that he was still in good physical condition to fulfill the duties as deep-sea diver. The ending scenes of the movies are in the Navy court where Cuba Godding Jr. faces the evaluation board of the Navy. To get back his status as a Navy diver, he would have to walk twelve steps on surface, wearing a 300-pound diving suit. In fact, according to Carl Brashear, he had to pass this test in reality. With much pain and strong effort he made it and was reinstated as a Navy diver. I think Cuba Gooding Jr. played his role magnificent and one could think that is the way the real Carl Brashear must have been. He delivers a strong, convincing performance. The cast of the movie truly makes it a great one. I think the director George Tillman Jr. as well as the script by Scott Marshall Smith have contributed greatly to make a movie that is so close to reality and yet a very good and interesting one for an audience of all ages.
