Paulo Friere The Banking Concept of Education

res educational theories, Rodriguez only thinks that he has learned many lessons about reading, education, language, family, and culture as he works his way through elementary school to college, graduate school, and to his career as a teacher and writer. Really, all that Rodriguez has learned is just another example of his banking education and what he has been told, not taught, throughout his life. The hierarchical relationship Rodriguez had with his teachers is also an outcome of his banking education. Rodriguezs teachers were initially his form-masters, nuns and the books he brought home from school. He learned all of his facts and figures from them. Rodriguez recalls a time when one of his nuns helped him through remedial reading. She taught him that books had some possibility of fellowship between a reader and a writer, a communication (Rodriguez, 577). This explanation formed on of Rodriguezs first relationships. Rodriguez had a relationship with his books and used them as a form of communication. The ideas he read about in his books became the ideas that came out of his mouth.Contrary to Freires educational theories, a student can have both a banking education and a problem-posing education. An example of this case is that ultimately, Rodriguezs own experiences become his teacher. His life experiences are a sort of problem-posing education. He looks back on his life, from early education through graduate school, and learns what he has accomplished and subsequently sacrificed. His parents have always been his teachers, but this does not become apparent to Rodriguez until he is a professional. They have taught him about his culture and what is necessary to succeed. It is not until he is much older that Rodriguez admits, his parents were always behind [him]. They made success possible (Rodriguez 573). His parents provided him with both a banking education by sending him to the schools they sent him to, and a problem...
