Paulo Friere The Banking Concept of Education

-posing education by letting him choose his path in life.According to Freire, one person can only have one type of education; however, I think Rodriguez is the exception to the rule. At first glance, Rodriguez is a model case of a banking education. He is part of a hierarchical system, in which information is directed downwards from teacher to student. However, not all of Rodriguezs experiences are of the banking concept style. Some of the experiences Rodriguez has later in life can be viewed as a problem-posing education. The education from his parents and the education he receives from his life experiences represent problem-posing. In this case, he is given many opportunities and options or in other words, he is faced with a problem. He uses the skills he has acquired and solves this problem by facing what he never let himself confront. He explores his culture and learns from where he has come. Some of Rodriguezs experiences cross Freires boundary lines of a banking or a problem-posing education. While the majority of Rodriguezs structured education was a banking experience, the lessons he learned outside of the classroom were that of a problem-posing nature. When Rodriguez goes back to his parents, the lessons he learns about his life and culture are based on a problem-posing education. For the first time in his life, Rodriguez feels less alienated when he returns to the life he had been alienated from by his banking education. Because they apprehend the challenge as interrelated to other problems within a total context, not as a theoretical question, the resulting comprehension tends to be increasingly critical and thus constantly less alienated (Freire 219). He understands why his parents encouraged his studies and why he became the student he is.
