solated from his own ship because he does not feel comfortable with it. This is the Captains first time in charge, and he is much younger than most of the crew. The crew does not trust the Captain, because they do not know each other.The first few paragraphs express how the Captain feels towards nature. He is insecure with land, and secure with the sea. The story opens up saying, “On my right hand there were lines of fishing-stakes resembling a mysterious system of half-submerged bamboo fences, incomprehensible in its division of the domain of tropical fishes, and crazy of aspect as if abandoned for ever by some nomad tribe of fishermen now gone to the other end of the ocean; for there was no sign of human habitation as far as the eye could reach.” The words used give a cold, insecure feeling towards the land. The land was abandoned, and this made the Captain feel insecure with it. The barren islets on his left, were small islands with no life, emptiness. This is how he felt about the land, empty, with nothing left. The captain felt more secure and trusted the sea. “Had its foundations set in a blue sea that itself looked solid, so still and stable did it lie below my feet; even the track of light from the westering sun shone smoothly, without that animated glitter which tells of an imperceptible ripple.” The sea was a sense of security and he craved this feeling for himself. “The tug steaming right into the land became lost to my sight, hull and funnel and masts, as though the impassive earth had swallowed her up without an effort, without a tremor.” This expresses that the Captain feels as if the world is impassive, and would take over the solid sea. Throughout the first few paragraphs, the Captains descriptions of the view around him, explains that he is depressed. “For there was no sign of human habitation as far as the eye could reach” The tone of this line is very...
