depressing. As the Captains ship drifts off into sea, he feels as if he is alone. The Captain then goes on the say “And then I was left alone with my ship, anchored at the head of the Gulf of Siam.” He was not left alone, he had a whole crew on the ship with him. The Captain sees himself as being alone, when there are in fact other crew members aboard, he is truly depressed and feels alienated.The captain is apprehensive because it is his first time holding the position as the captain on the ship. They ship is on its way home, and the Captain does not inform the readers of what happened to the original Captain. The Captain is just about the youngest on the ship, and is fearful he is going to do the wrong thing. The Captain is extremely insecure under the circumstances that he is the captain of the ship. The Captain did not know any of the crewmembers and felt as if though he was a stranger. “All these people had been together for eighteen months or so, and my position was that of the only stranger on board…. But what I felt most was a my being a stranger to the ship.” The Captain then takes guard over the anchor and sends his crew to sleep. This is not a typical thing that a Captain does, and he is looked at strangely because of this. The Captain does this because he does not have much confidence, and has a hard time seeing himself as a leader. Leggatt psychologically completes the Captain with his decisiveness and confidence. The Captain was extremely insecure because it was his first time as the captain of a ship, and these insecurities gave him a lack of confidence and made him indecisive. Finally, when Leggatt leaves, the Captain feels decisive and confident.
