Billy is married to a woman who he finds physical unattractive so of course he would have thoughts of a woman who was beautiful as Montana, it’s like a guilty pleasure thing. It in deed makes sense for a man being that sexually deprived and unhappy and highly unlucky, to go crazy. You can’t really live if your not happy, may be that’s why Billy does not resist death, like a “normal person” would. So here’s what I think, Billy is a crazy nutcase! Whenever the real world gets too hard he “time travels” to Tralfamador, he’s little fantasyland where everything is wonderful, and he has his Hollywood wife. Is Billy crazy? Many visionaries, saints and great mind are considered crazy during their lifetime because they were before their time. Such visionaries are Moses, Mohamed and Christ. Could this be the case for Billy? I must admit that Billy does indeed have many visionary qualities. Like a visionary Billy encounters a lot of hardships, such has going through the war, losing his father and this wife. He is also like a martyr, because he takes the blame for things and helps others. You can even compare Billy to Christ. Christ helped Mary Magalia who was a prostitute, he helped her realize the error of her ways, and he led her to become a better person and forgave her for all her sins and gave her love. Billy helps Montana become a better person too and helps her realize her errors in her life. Billy treats her kindly and he also gave her love. Billy gives Montana the gift of a child too, this casts away her past and makes you for give her because she is a mother. Billy like a visionary has special powers, he can travel thought time he is “unstuck”. He encounters a higher power, and He knows the future.
