He is confused about the relationship of his motherand stepfather and also about his relationship with hisuncle and grandparents. From the perspective of a sevenyear old mind, all these familial interactions cannot beunderstand and could never make sense to a child such asTeddy.In another part of the story, Ellen Gilchrist showsthat Teddy fantasizes about escaping his situation. Whilekeeping watch of his ill mother, he reads one of his olderbrother’s books called The Big Green Book which tells thestory of a young boy who, while living with a mean aunt anduncle, discovers a book of magic spells. This boy learnshow to use these spells to become animals or make himselfinvisible or “do anything he wanted to do.”(p.33) Gilchrist is showing the reader that Teddy would probablylike to have this power to escape his unfortunatecircumstances. Teddy also tries to make use of the powerof prayer. The author narrates in one section of the storyof how Teddy would sometimes go to church and kneel downand beg God “not to let his momma divorce Eric.”(p. 36) And he would tell God that if his prayer was not answeredhe would “pretend that he was his grandfather and threatenGod.”(p. 36)Teddy’s relationship with his grandparents, especiallyhis grandfather, is also unhappy. Most children findsolace and refuge with grandparents but not so in Teddy’scase. He once told Eric that “they boss [him] around allthe time.”(p. 34) And he also said that his grandfatherforced him to “make his bed, ride the stupid horses andhitch up the pony cart and if [he] didn’t do what he said,he hit [him] with a belt.
