friend, makes him feel a spectrum of feelings from love to hate in a matter of hours.Holden notices many things in everyday life that others never really realize are there. He describes the Museum of Natural History and how no matter how many times you go there, nothing ever changes. The only thing that changes is you. He talks about the little things that humor him. His younger sister Phoebe is a major part of his life. She makes him happy and he genuinely cares about her. According to Holden, she's always doing little things that "just kill me." One day, as he's walking along the street, he notices a young boy walking with his parents. The boy is entertaining himself by walking in the street as if he is on a tightrope, and singing a song. Phoebe, later on, when Holden goes to visit her, tells Holden the words to the song: "If a body meet a body coming through the rye." Holden thinks the words are "If a body catch a body coming through the rye." When Phoebe asks him what he would like to be if he had the chance to be anything when he gets older. Holden says he would like to be the catcher in the rye. He pictures a bunch of kids playing ball in a field of rye and in the outfield, there is a cliff. This is where he would stand and catch all the kids who may start to go over the cliff. That is all he would like to do all day long. In the end of the novel, Holden decides to go home and face his parents. The next chapter (the last one) is written like the first one. He quickly states that he doesn't know what his plans are for the future. He tells us that he will be returning to school and discusses some of the people in the book. He realizes how everyone really affected him. Holden misses all the people he spoke about, even the most horrible ones. The story of The Catcher in the Rye forces the reader to think.
