Then Danforth arrives with Hathorne, and they discuss whether they should allow Parris to meet the prisoners. Cheever explains how the town is all messed up because so many people are in jail. Later, Parris arrives and tells Danforth how Abigail has disappeared with Mercy Lewis and stolen his money. Parris worries about the rumors of rebellion against the witchcraft proceedings in Andover, but Hathorne reminds Parris how there has only been great pleasure in all of the Salem executions. Parris reminds him about Rebecca Nurse, that she is no immoral woman like the others that were executed and how there will be less pleasure. He claims that he worries for his safety, since he found a dagger outside his doorway. Still, Danforth won’t postpone any of the executions. Danforth calls for Elizabeth Proctor, and Hale tells her that he does not want Proctor to die, because he would feel responsible for the murder. He says to Elizabeth that “God may damn a liar less than a person who throws one's life away,” but Elizabeth says that this may be the Devil's argument. Finally Elizabeth agrees to speak with Proctor.
