The Effect Parallelism has on the American Dream

uchanan (10). Essentially, at certain points in the story, Tom can even be considered part of Gatsbys American Dream. Gatsby, who believes that through wealth and power, one can acquire happiness, tries to attain happiness by reaching into the past and reliving an old dream, but in order to do this he must first have wealth. Gatsby has everything in the world he could possibly want except Daisy which he finds out that no matter how much wealth a person acquires, it is impossible to put a price tag on love. And because of this, Gatsby becomes to envy Tom and strives to endure in a lifestyle of power and wealth similar to his. Also, in order to make Daisy aware of his wealth so that she will want to be with him, he tries to show off his humongous house, expensive cars, and suits and shirts. Once Gatsby acquires this wealth, he moves near Daisy, Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay (83), and throws extravagant parties, hoping by chance she might show up at one of them. When this fails to work, he approaches Nick Carraway, Daisys Cousin, who agrees to set up a meeting between Gatsby and Daisy, He wants to know . . . if youll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over (83). Nick agrees to this plan but begins to realize that no matter how good things are between Daisy and Gatsby when they meet, she cannot possibly live up to Gatsbys visions of her. Gatsby seems to idealized Daisy in his mind to the extent that the real Daisy, charming s she is, will almost certainly fail to live up to his expectations of her. But for the time being, their romance seems almost fully rekindled. Finally, his desire to wear a gold and silver suit to his meeting with Daisy is also very symbolic of the wealth in which he is trying to show off so that she will take notice to him.At one point in time, Nick attempts to show Jay the absurdity of his dream, but Jay innocently replies to Nicks assertio...
