Since the government would not recognize common law marriages at this time, all legal marriages were to be held in a church. Unfortunately, all future spouses had to be approved by the parents. If a childs choice of a spouse was deemed unacceptable, very few churches would perform a ceremony. Due to these restrictions, choices for marriage were still limited, and Americas youth were still under the watchful eye of their parents regarding courtship.The limitations and restrictions of courting continued in America through the entire nineteenth century, up until the twentieth century when World War I began. World War I was known as the war that would end all wars. When it ended in 1918, Europe was left in ruins physically, politically, and economically. The years following the most devastating war took place prior to the 1920s. Europe was faced with the struggles of economic and political recovery, but America did not take part in that aspect of the war. Left virtually unharmed by World War I, the United States was even able to experience a decade of peace and prosperity following the disastrous war. Of the many reasons for Americas prosperity, technology played one of the most vital parts in bring the great economic and cultural prosperity that America experienced during the 1920s.
