Since courting was a parentally regulated activity that usually occurred in the home, many liberties were granted with the invention of the automobile. The automobile provided a perfect way for people, especially adolescents, to socialize and [have fun]. The automobile craze even came to a point where the back seat of a car replaced the parlor as a place for courtship and love to flourish (Gordon 58).In 1929, the stock market crashed, and all hell broke loose across America. The prosperity it had seen in the 1920s was gone, and so were some of the new ideals that came along with it, but not all. By this time, men and women were much more open with each other, clothing became scandalously small on women, and most of the Victorian ideals had perished. By this time, it was even said that women laughed much louder, stared more obviously, and their moves were overall much sloppier (Lott 42). Although America was in a terrifying depression, that still did not squander all the countrys new found ideals regarding courtship, love, and life. After the depression, the American economy flourished once more. Maybe not quite as much as it had been in the 1920s, but at this time, it was one of the most powerful nations in the world. Not only the economy changed, but society as a whole evolved. The loose morals of the 1920s had left a permanent imprint on American society. Courting was not just a quiet at home visit anymore, but a wild night for a group of friends at a local drive-in. By this time, what teenagers were involved in also made a huge difference in the view of sex and the sex drive.
