A reader must remember this, when reading the novel, asNick can easily forget some of the important points that took place. The reader must keepthese points in mind as it might provide better understanding of the novel. Nick provides the moral framework for this novel which helps to shape youropinions of the other characters. 4"'Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,' he toldme, 'just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you'vehad.'" Nick quotes his father, at this point in the book. He points out that he shouldn'tforget any details, since it may give the wrong impression to the reader. 5"I am still alittle afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my father snobbishly suggested, and Isnobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parcelled out unequally atbirth." This gives the reader some insight into Nick's own personal values. He alsoreminds himself of his fathers words of wisdom. through this quote he tries to point outthat each person is born into the world under different circumstances, and thus eachperson is different, having their own separate, and different morals. 6"Every one suspectshimself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honestpeople that I have ever known." Nick is mentioning one of cardinal virtues which he feelspertain to himself, he feels he is one of the few honest people around. The other cardinalvirtues would be faith, hope and charity. He also feels that when he judges women like Jordan, they should match up to hisvery own virtues. 7"'I thought you were rather an honest, straightforwatd person. I thoughtit was your secret pride.''I'm thirty,' I said. 'I'm five years too old to lie to myself and call it honor.'She didn't answer. Angry and half in love with her, and tremend...
