Through this discussion, it isshown that Nick feels that he might be making a mistake ending the affair in which theywere having. The reader learns quite a little bit at this point in the book. Jordan feels thatNick is not the person she thought he was. Nick's pride made him think he could acceptJordan on her own terms, with her criticism and her irresponsibility, and that he wouldescape the consequences of that acceptance.Nick is very judgemental of the other characters in the novel, which isinstrumental in how one interprets the novel. 8"'They're a rotten crowd,' I shouted acrossthe lawn.
