Instead of trying to sell memberships to a club, she shows how specifically handguns kill people “The FBI reports (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1985) that more than 60 percent of all murders are caused by guns, and handguns are involved in more than 70 percent of these” (422). Another reason Cassidy’s essay was not as effective was because he made no effort to use any kind of statistics to back up his statement that violent crimes with firearms have stabilized or are declining “ As a result of such measures, violent crimes with firearms, like assault and robbery, have stabilized or are actually declining” ( 419 ). About the only kind of statistics he gives are ones that show positive aspects of the NRA “We are the shooting sports’ leading safety organization, with more than 26,000 certified instructors training 750,000 students and trainees last year alone” ( 420). This is just another tactic to try and recruit new members. As for Desuka’s essay she, gives many statistics. An example of this is when she points out that only about 30 percent of murders are committed by robbers or rapists. She also gives statistics to prove her point about how 60 percent of all murders are caused by guns. There are many more statistics to help prove her statements in this article, where as Cassidy uses hardly any. Finally, the most important point Cassidy made was that in the Second Amendment the right to have firearms is given to every American citizen he writes “The American people have a right “to keep and bear arms” (418). Without this statement he really has no essay. There is also some evidence of dishonesty when Cassidy only writes the part of the Second Amendment that will support his essay, and not the whole thing.
