Chaucer writes about Chanticleer saying, In all the land for crowing hed no peer, his voice was jollier than the organ blowing in church on Sundays, he was great at crowning Chaucer explains how great Chanticleer seems and that he indeed was the greatest of all the cocks, he possessed beauty and strength unlike the rest. Chanticleer explains one day to his love Pertelot of his dream and explains to her of his fear. Pertelot then says, Alas, what cowardice! by god above, youve forfeited my heart and lost my love. I cannot love a coward, come what may for certainly whatever we may say, all women long-and O that if may be! -For husbands tough, dependable and free. What the hen is trying to say is that Chanticleer would rather waste his time pondering in silly dreams bout himself rather than to care for the love of his life. Chanticleer then tries to explain that he worries dreams are like prophecies and tells her of stories of what he means, He says, So my dear Pertelote, If you disconcern the force of these examples, you may learn one never should be careless about dreams, for, undeniably, I say it seems that they are a sign of trouble breeding. After their continuing arguing he then charms Pertelot to forgive his selfishness and, feathers her, to show his manliness to her. The next day he is confronted by a fox who lets him go accidentally, the fox then tries to lure him by tricking him, Chanticleer then says, No, and courses on us both, and first on me for being such a dunce as let you fool me oftener than once.
