Merchants Tale, is Chaucers attempt to one again talk about marriage as he did in The millers Tale, An old man January tries to search for lover through marriage and finds that he can marry the beautiful you maiden called May. The names of the characters reflect on the months of the year, January is a month of cold winter that has no life while May is a month of beauty and nature blooming. January asks his friends for knowledge of marriage in order to be a good husband. Chaucer writes, Im no longer young god knows, Im near the pit, Im on the brink: I have a soul, of which I ought to think. He tires to tell us that he has given his body pleasure but now he must find inner peace by having a wife he can accomplish just that. Januarys loyal squire Damian betrays January by trying to have relation with May. Chaucer writes, Sick hearted Damian in Venus fire Is so consumed, Hes dying with desire; Hes trying to tell us that Damian is a young lover who set his sights on may and wants her at any cost. In the end both lovers are caught by January with the aid of Pluto who tries to expose women as the cause for all of mens troubles. The Merchants tale reflects upon he morals not fully discussed in The Millers Tale, such as womens treachery towards men and mens complete obsession and indulgence towards a woman that is already marries to a man who is not as bright as the cunning lover.The Franklins Tale, Another tale of relationships is in contrast to The Millers Tale and The Merchants Tale, illustrating loyalty within ones relationship. The Brave knight named Aruigus leaves his wife Dorigen who believes that the rocks at the shore would take her husbands life. So she asks the squire Areilous for help in the removal of the rocks and agrees to be his lover to clear the danger for her true love.
