In rage for his bitter defeat he orders Virginous to be killed. Chaucer then writes, A thousand men came surging form the city thrusting their way into the court in pity and hope to save the knight. The people coming to aid the knight shows the power of chastity and honor the knight has and is saved form death himself. In the end Appious dies for his crime and the knight saves Claudius even though he killed his daughter. Chaucer shows us that chastity is something that does not come with out a price and that one such as the knight paid the price for the Lechery of the lustful judge, The daughter Virginia an innocent character is torn between the battle of Lust v. Chastity and must submit to honor in order to preserve what her father believed was right.The friars tale, deals with the injustices of a summoner, a person who carries out the punishment of others such as witchcraft and lechery. The friar begins explaining what a summoner is, A summoners one who runs about the nation dealing out summonses for fornification, is beaten up by every villager. Chaucer tells us that even the friar who is a holy man sees that summoners as a plague to the church and people. Insulted by the remark the summoner replies, Say what he likes, and when my turns to come Ill pay him back, by God! When the summoner says this we can see that he is a very ruthless man who will get his revenge in the end. Chaucer later compares the summoner to the devil, Ill hold to my engagement, on the level, though you were Satans self, the very Devil! Chaucer does this in order to show how the summoner does everything opposite to what he stands for.
