ere so successful in drawing people to their religion. They were willing to take all of the outcasts from the tribe to their new religion. The rejected one?s who had nowhere to go were brought in to their religion. With this acceptance of the outcasts, the missionaries group grew greatly. This gave them more power and influence. At first the Ibo did not see it as a threat when these people joined the missionaries. They felt that these people were no good and evil so they were glad to get rid of them. But later on other people saw how good this religion was, and they decided to join the missionaries and their growing church. For example, when people shaved their heads they were kicked out of the clan. The missionaries came and told them that they were no different from other people. Mr. Achebe says, ?The two outcasts shaved off their hair, and soon they were the strongest adherents of the new faith. And what was more, nearly all the osu in Mbanta followed their example. It was in fact one of them who in his zeal brought the church into serious conflicts with the clan a year later by killing the sacred python, the emanation of the god of water.? (Pg.157) This shows us that the missionaries were successful in getting many of the outcasts of the tribe to their religion. When Mr. Achebe writes, "soon they were the strongest adherents of the new faith" this shows us that the missionaries were very successful in getting the outcasts of the tribe. Mr. Achebe thinks that these outcasts are evil but he knows that the missionaries are taking them in and that their group is growing. These kinds of additions to the missionary?s community led to the break up of the Ibo Clan. In conclusion, the missionaries brought with them new ways of life. These ways of life were much better for some people of the tribe.
