Wuthering Heights7

In Wuthering Heights religion and religious elements are missing from almost all aspects of the novel. The closest thing to a church is Gimmerton Kirk, and the closest thing to a religious leader is Joseph. I feel that Emily Bronte’s view of religion is not very influential in people’s ways of carrying out their lives. Possibly religion is present but does not impact their decisions or thoughts.This non-influential view of religion is important in Wuthering Heights because it allows many of the conflicts and events to be carried out. Obviously many of the ways the characters feel are not influenced through any type of conscience or influential forces other that themselves. I feel that religion would have kept most of the conflicts and dramatic relationships to a minimum, because the characters would probably look at things differently. One example of conflict in chapter eleven is when Nelly travels to Wuthering Heights to talk to Hindley, but she finds Hareton instead. Hareton throws things and curses her. The conversation that follows is found on page 129. “Who has taught you those fine words, my bairn?” I inquired. “The curate?”“Damn the curate, and thee! Gie me that,” he replied.Tell us where you got your lessons, and you shall have it,” said I. “Who’s your master?”“Devil Daddy” was his answerThis quote shows how even the young people were not brought up under religious morals. If Hareton were brought up better then this act of violence would have never happened. Hareton even refers to “Devil Daddy,” which clearly cannot be a good example of a religious model.Another instance in the novel that shows how none of the characters had a good religious upbringing is Heathcliff’s anger and his need for total control.
