Onecritic states: "....if an individual is unsure abouthis/her self-identity, one cannot possibly have anexisting destiny, considering one has no idea what he/shecan sustain or produce" (Tallot 97). This helps tojustify the difficulty that the invisible man had inreplying to Mr. Norton's question about his fate. Andwhen Ellison's hero finally answers what he feels abouthis race, he gives a response much similar to what manyof the white spokesmen that he has listened to (Inspeeches and sermons) that talk of the subject. He saysto Mr. Norton that he feels that the black race is notmaking much progress at the moment because they choosenot to learn. The invisible man only responds in thisway to avoid any confrontation with Mr. Norton or anywhite person for that matter, because he feels that if hemakes trouble, it will ruin his chances of attendingcollege. Therefore, he appears meek and obedient. Theinvisible man will loose this veil of quietude due to hisnext stage of growth.Exposition is our character's second tier ofdevelopment. His talent of rhetorical speaking grantshim this exposition to the public (It also paved the wayfor him to attend college, but at that time his talentwas not appreciated and therefore he took no heed of it). He makes a speech on the streets of Harlem during a riot. Afterwards a very suspicious looking man pulls him asideto congratulate him on his speech and invites him to havea cup of coffee with him at the nearest diner. The manis Brother Jack. Brother Jack tells him about anorganization (the Brotherhood) that he is a part of andalso how he thinks the invisible man's talent could takehim places if he was to join the organization. BrotherJack offers him a business card and invites him to attenda Brotherhood party. The invisible man is skeptical, butends up attending the party anyway. At the party BrotherJack intro...
