Ellison's hero is given a new name and aplentiful amount of money (to him it was plentiful, sincehe has not had money in a long time). He has asubstantial position and his words make a difference andhas influence on peoples' views and actions. From thismoment on, the invisible man, for the first time in hislife, is actually a part of something. As one criticstates: "....it takes the feeling of significance andimportance of a man to bring forth his true talent andfuel his creativity" (Tallot 110). The invisible man hasbeen exposed to the public and becomes a prominent figureof Harlem. This exposure brought him confidence and leadhim to his next level of growth.His next stage of development was not necessarilyauspicious. During his successfulness as an substantialmotif for the Brotherhood Organziation and popularitywith the public, he splurged for a while off of his ownattainment. This stage of false freedom occurred as hiswalked down the streets of Harlem and stopped by a foodstand to eat a yam. As he ate the yam, he was no longerashamed of the things he loved and began to feelhomesick. While walking and eating he was suddenly overcome with anintense feeling of freedom-simply because he was eatingwhile walking along the street. It was exhilarating forhim since he no longer had to worry about anyone who sawhim to scold him and tell him what was not was notproper. The nameless character started to reflect backto the question of the African American race and thoughtbitterly to himself, "Why you could cause the greatesthumiliation simply by confronting us [black people] withsomething we liked" (Ellison 229). The invisible manbegan to think of how people who had known him at schoolwould think if they saw him now and how shocked theywould be. He had a sense of lightness and a care-freeattitude, as if he had it all. Aft...
