Invisible Man

er this momentarysense of freedom and inevitability, he unearthed hisidentity and arrived to an actualization of himself. This lead him to his final stage of self-discovery.The invisible man finds his true self after thesecond riot and confrontation with Ras "the Exhorter", hetakes a step back and looks at everything around him. Herealizes that he does not have to be in such situationsbecause he is useless and has no impact on society afterall. He finally does away with the Brotherhoodorganization because he understands that when he ishonest, he is hated. The invisible man now realizesthat his grandfather was wrong about "yessing them todestruction" (Ellison 488). He comes to a conclusionthat no one has an actual "place" in society. Heunderstands that everyone has a purpose that will lead usall to the same higher , more complex fate, but we arenothing but pawns in the game of life. Even though hishas discovered himself, he knows that society willcontinue to look through him, and for this reason, heremains invisible.This novel teaches us about the travail of findingone's true self in order to become a significantindividual in society. This distinct individual willhope to leave a lasting impression behind for others toconcede and possibly adhere to. The invisible man showedsignificant progress during his soul-searching journey infour significant stages: self-ignorance, exposition,false freedom and self-discovery. Ellison's hero is adelineation of individuals who feel they are obsolete inthe eyes of society. These individuals sense a need tosearch for their identity in order to have a purpose orfate in life. The invisible man's four stages ofdevelopment linked him to a fate that was far greaterthan he could apprehend. Understanding his identityhelped him to realize the problems of society.
