Pedro needs sex, he needs companionship, so naturally, Tita fits this mold nicely for a while. She fits long enough for Pedro to find someone who was more convenient for himself. Pedro did not care about Tita as a person, instead he cared about her as a solution to some of his desires.All too often, The female in Hispanic culture is overlooked. She is bound by tradition and customs until she ceases almost to be human. Beyond that, the woman often does lose her humanity through the eyes of those that she serves. Tita was such a woman as this. “Tita didn’t distinguish between tears of laughter and tears of sorrow. For her laughing was a form of crying.” Everything that Tita did illicited the opposite response that one would expect. The more she worked to do as she was told, the less appreciation she got. Hers was a bitter pain, and a bitter existence....
