To Kill a Mockingbird essay Guilty.guiltyguilty..guilty.(page 211) the words that change one mans life forever. To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel by Harper Lee, brings one town, the town of Maycomb, to the realization that all men are to be treated equal. Mankind is not ready to face the fact that all men are equal no matter what color of skin another may have. The trial of Tom Robinson, a citizen of Maycomb, helps to bring the townspeople to that realization. A man is put on trial for a crime he did not commit, but is charged anyway just because of the color of his skin. One point is that no matter what Atticus says or does to prove toms innocence, the town of Maycomb has all ready made up its mind, whites are, and always will be better than blacks. Another point is prejudice has no place in a court of law. Finally, prejudice is more far reaching than just white and black or just the United States; it affects people of all races the world over.The citizens of Maycomb have one strong belief that can not be changed. They feel that whites, above all, are better than blacks. Jem once says to Dill, Well Dill, after all hes just a Negro.(page199) Jem is referring to how Tom Robinson is treated by the attorney. Dill feels the way he is treated is wrong, but Jem reassures dill that it is okay because he is black. This statement sums up the way all of the citizens feel about the blacks in their town. They feel it is okay to talk down to a black or treat a black with no respect.A person would like to think that when they enter a courtroom their verdict would be based on hard evidence not stereotype from the people around them. When Atticus enters the courtroom defending Tom, he knows, right from the beginning he will lose. After the trial he tells Jem, who feels the verdict was wrong, that in our courts when it is a white mans word against a black mans, the white man always wins..The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in...
