to kill a mocking bird

a court room, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box.(page 220) This is completely true. There is no hard evidence proving that Tom is guilty, none at all, but the fact that he is black and the Ewells are white, is evidence enough for the jury. People are often hypocritical in that they condemn others prejudice when they themselves are prejudiced. Miss gates is teaching her class about democracy; she talks about Hitler killing the Jews. She says, Thats the difference between America and Germany. We are a democracy and they are a dictatorshipover here we dont believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced.(page 245) She is telling her class that that is wrong, and that America would never do such a thing. The irony here is that the town of Maycomb, the town she lives in, is sending a black man to his death for a crime they know he did not commit, otherwise known as persecution. She also says that the only people who would do that are those that are prejudiced, not realizing that she herself is prejudiced, not toward Jews, but toward blacks. Prejudice has always been with us and likely always will be. This story, To Kill a mockingbird, proves this quite well, from the prejudice of the town, to the prejudice of the courtroom, to as far as the prejudice around the world. As long as there is prejudice in our world, there can never be peace. There is something wrong with an innocent man being sent to death because of one towns feelings toward his race. One more thing gentlemen, before I quit, Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal(Atticus, page 205)....
