American Civil War

division grew in colonial times and resulted from geographical differences (World Book, 615). The North welcomed modernization. In fact the North had a silent revolution in which factories sprang up and cities grew (World Book, 615). The South stayed with the traditional ways in which they learned and knew and did not want to leave the old times and ideas to bring upon modernization. They grew tobacco and cotton and brought in black slaves to do the labor. The South also established crops such as cotton, sugar cane, and sugar beets. The South lived in a rural way of life which supported an agricultural economy based on slave labor (World Book, 615).In addition to the aforementioned causes, there was growing animosity between the federal government and states over what rights and powers the states possessed which also influenced the war. States believed that they should receive more rights to establish laws and to enforce these laws, along with rights of land and a more free state government system. States believed that the federal government was too controlling and carried too much power. However, the federal government was reluctant to hand over more power to the states in fear of giving the state governments too much power.Despite all the conflict that lasted the duration of 4 years, Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee brought forth resolution. Abraham Lincoln became one of our nations most popular presidents and gained fame throughout the world. Before the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln referred to the nation as, a nation divided (World Book, 615). He brought the war to close thanks to his ingenious ideas and quick actions which he never second guessed. Another hero, but only to the South, was General Robert E. Lee. He almost won the war in many of his campaigns but eventually surrendered at Appomattox Court House. There were many other results to this gruesome war.
