Married men were heavily fined and taxed for not having children and taxbreaks were given to people with three or more children. Augustus also made laws thatgave the male head of household the right to decide who the children would marry, wherethey would live, and what profession and economic goals they would pursue. Augustusalso re-established the priest hoods of Rome. He revived old religious customs andattempted to restore the old stern morality.When Ledipus died Augustus assumed the role of Pontifex Maximus (HighestPriest). He also affirmed his power as Pontifex Maximus to prohibit the Roman peoplefrom participating in mystery cults. He was also granted the role of Father of his country.Augustus was a great organizer and he conducted a census at around the time of the birthof Jesus Christ. With his organizational ability he introduced laws that emphasized hardwork, traditional family values, and loyalty to the Roman government. They proved to besuccessful. Part of his success came from his ability to relate to the people of Rome. Hisyoung and energetic personality made it easy for the people of Rome to communicate withAugustus. Augustus dressed like common men of Rome and would not dress in thecostumes of the upper class. The extreme popularity of Augustus is evident with thepeople offering him Chancellorship for life. He turns down the title. People also insistedthat they worship him as a god. Once again he refuses, saying that he wants people toworship his ideas instead. Eventually the month of Sextilis is renamed August in his honor. History remembers the greatness of Augustus in several ways. Although it seemsunusual Augustus Caesar was one of the few emperors to die a natural death. Augustuswas said to have entered a city of brick and stone and left a city of marble.
